Using Benford Analysis to determine unusual data patterns

Analyze data to predict the distribution of the first digit in a set of numbers. You can identify unusual data patterns that may imply the data fabrication or fraud.


To predict the distribution of the first digit

  1. Open the document you need to analyze and verify data by clicking File > Open.
  2. Select data area and click Data > Benford Analysis.
    Or, click the Benford Analysis icon in the Data tab.
  3. From the Benford Analysis dialog box, specify the location where you want to display a chart and a table to compare the actual distribution of digits with the expected distribution.
  4. Click OK and then compare the difference.
